Malfunctioning traffic signal sends oversize load into 148 year old church

A malfunctioning traffic signal caused a collision that sent a semi truck hauling an oversize load into a nearly 150-year-old church on Wednesday.

The accident happened on August 28th in Washtenaw County, Michigan at the Pleasant Lake Road and M-52 intersection.

According to MLive, the semi truck was hauling large construction equipment west on Pleasant Lake Road when it collided with a pickup truck towing a trailer as it drove north on M-52. The collision sent the commercial vehicle crashing into Sharon Church located at the northwest corner of the intersection.

Police report that the traffic light at the intersection was not functioning correctly, causing the confusion that led to the crash. According to Michigan law, traffic signals that are not functioning should be treated as a four-way stop by all drivers.

Only minor injuries were sustained in the wreck, but the 148 year old church sustained damage. The church was built in 1876. The extent of the damage is not currently known.
