Michigan Motor Carrier Officer dies after being struck by car during semi truck traffic stop

Published:

Michigan State Police (MSP) announced that a Motor Carrier Officer has died following a crash that occurred during a semi truck traffic stop last week in Lincoln Park.

The crash occurred at 8:30 a.m. on September 13 on northbound I-75 near Dix in Lincoln Park.

MSP Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Kerstetter, 45, with the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, was conducting a traffic stop on a semi truck on the shoulder of the roadway when his patrol vehicle was struck by a Ford Explorer.

“Preliminary investigation and witness statements indicate that a Ford Explorer struck the median wall before continuing down the freeway, eventually striking MC Officer Kerstetter’s patrol vehicle, and pushing it into the back of the semi-truck,” MSP said.

The Ford Explorer driver passed away at the scene.

Kerstetter was hospitalized following the crash.

The semi truck driver was not injured.

On September 15, MSP announced that Kerstetter’s family had opted to remove him from life support in order to donate his organs after he was unable to overcome injuries sustained in the September 13 crash.

“We are heartbroken for this loss,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP. “Traffic enforcement is dangerous work. The dedication of our motor carrier officers and troopers to keeping the public safe on our roadways is commendable and honorable. With the decision to give the gift of life, even in his death, MC Officer Kerstetter is serving others.”

The crash remains under investigation.
