Minimum account balances proposed to improve traffic on World Trade Bridge

Published:

Laredo city council members discussed a potential solution to truck traffic on the World Trade Bridge on Monday night.

The city council meeting was held on Monday night, July 22nd in Laredo, Texas.

According to KGNS News, commercial trucks have been turned around at the border crossing in droves due to empty payment accounts connected to stickers on their windshields. Forcing these semi trucks to turn around has caused increased traffic jams at the border crossing.

In response to this traffic, Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino introduced a proposal Monday that would require trucking companies to maintain a minimum balance of $100 in their account in order to cross through the World Trade Bridge checkpoint. Trevino says this requirement would lessen traffic jams and reduce lost revenue at the bridge.

“Anytime there’s delays, anytime there’s back up, it causes a ricochet effect and the consequence affect to all the traffic,” he said. “So we want the traffic to continue to be flowing as it is. It is a challenge for us to keep the logistics of the traffic going, so these situations only hamper the way that we need to progress.”

A motion has been passed to explore the possibility of the proposed minimum balance. Bridge Director Yvette Limon has been consulted on the best way to move forward with this proposal. Limon will present her suggestions and the next city council meeting.
