Motorist dead after pass-attempt ends in semi truck collision

One man is dead after an early morning pass attempt that ended in a head-on collision with a semi truck. 

The accident happened on August 17th at around 3:16 a.m. on US 98 North at Earnest Road in Polk County, Florida. 

According to WFLA 8, a 36-year-old motorist was driving south on US 98 when he attempted to  pass another southbound vehicle by crossing into the northbound lanes. As the motorist attempted to pass, he crossed into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer, and the two collided head on. 

The force of the collision killed the motorist instantly. The truck driver and their passenger were not hurt in the incident. 

The roadway was closed for nearly five hours for cleanup and investigation of the incident. 

Investigators say that no charges are expected as a result of the incident. The incident is still under investigation.
