NYS Thruway worker fatally struck by big rig while setting up work zone

New York State Police (NYSP) are investigating a crash that claimed the life of a maintenance worker and critically injured another on the New York State (NYS) Thruway on Thursday.

The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on May 9.

According to the NYS Thruway Authority, a maintenance worker was setting up a construction zone on I-90 near Henrietta when he was struck by a tractor trailer.

The worker passed away at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

A second worker was also struck and suffered serious injuries.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said, Earlier today, a Thruway Authority maintenance worker lost his life while setting up a work zone on the I-90 in Henrietta. Another was injured in the same incident and remains in serious condition. We are heartbroken over this senseless death, praying for the recovery of the injured worker and grateful to first responders who sprang into action to support their fellow public servants. This incident is a tragic reminder: responsible driving is a life-saving skill, and all New Yorkers should remain alert, slow down and move over when approaching a work zone or stopped vehicle.

The crash is under investigation by NYSP.
