The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is planning to conduct a chain inspection check on I-84.
The chain inspection event will take place on November 7, 2024, on eastbound I-84 at mile marker 217, east of Pendleton. ODOT says that the purpose of this chain check is to educate semi truck drivers about chain-up requirements and proper chain use.
Starting at mile marker 213, speeds will be reduced to 55 m.p.h., and signage will direct trucks and towing vehicles to the right lane. Drivers will see cones separating right and left lanes on approach to the inspection site at mile marker 217.
Once drivers enter the inspection site, ODOT staff, Motor Carrier Enforcement Officers, and the Oregon State Patrol will ask questions about equipment. ODOT says that this should not take longer than 15 seconds.
“We experience several extended freeway closures during winter due to vehicles not chaining up when required,” said ODOT District 12 Manager Rich Lani.
The November 17 event is an educational event for truckers, but ODOT plans to conduct regular chain inspections at mile marker 217 when the winter weather hits.
“Drivers with the appropriate traction devices can install them, undergo inspection, and continue their journey. Drivers who do not have the correct equipment will be sent back to the Exit 216 interchange to address the issues or return west on I-84,” officials said.
