Semi truck following GPS stuck on “extremely uneven” dirt road for 10 hours

Published:

A semi truck was stuck on an unmaintained dirt road overnight after following GPS directions off the Highway.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 22nd in San Luis Obispo County, California at about 11:30 p.m.

According to… the semi truck was traveling north up the Cuesta Grade on Highway 101 when the GPS instructed the driver to turn off the highway and onto Stagecoach Road. The driver chose to follow the GPS directions and turned onto the dirt road, quickly getting stuck on the uneven terrain.

The truck was left hanging partially off the side of the road, making for a difficult tow. The tow truck driver and California Highway Patrol officers worked for 10 hours to free the commercial vehicle. The truck was able to get back onto the highway by 9:45 a.m. the following morning.

“Trucker warning: please do not follow GPS directions onto Stagecoach Road, stay on US-101 Cuesta Grade,” CHP wrote in a Facebook post following the lengthy incident.

“This will not end well for any larger vehicles, very costly and lengthy recovery.  This is not a paved roadway, it is an extremely uneven dirt road that is not maintained.”
