Specialized blitz targets impaired commercial vehicle drivers in Maryland

The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCDP) recently conducted an enforcement effort targeting commercial vehicle drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol.

The impaired commercial driver blitz took place on August 22, 2024, in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Officials say that the purpose of the blitz was to curb the number of crashes involving commercial vehicles.

“This operation brought together a team of specialized officers, each with training in commercial motor vehicle inspection and drug recognition. These officers used their expertise to identify and remove impaired commercial drivers from Montgomery County’s roadways, conducting 27 inspections, resulting in 98 issued violations, ensuring safer travel for all motorists,” MCDP said.

Police say that the August 22 effort was a a pilot program, with the potential to become a recurring effort based on the results and effectiveness observed.

This was a Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO) grant-funded operation.
