A load of lithium batteries are still burning on Interstate 15 a full four days after the initial semi truck overturn.
The accident happened on Friday, July 26th after a semi truck hauling the load of lithium batteries overcorrected, sending the rig veering into the right shoulder of the highway before eventually tipping over and catching fire. The truck driver has been identified only as a 57-year-old man from Westminster, California. The trucking company involved has not been disclosed.
The batteries were on their way from La Mirada, California to a solar site in Potosi, Wisconsin, reported KTNV.
All lanes of Interstate 15 were reopened after two days of closures as firefighters battled the dangerous blaze, but the load continues to burn as of Tuesday evening.
Emergency personnel say that the batteries are burning a safe distance from the highway, and are being monitored until they can be safely removed from the side of the road.
