A truck driver won big last month on a ticket he almost threw away, according to Maryland lottery officials.
On November 7, Maryland Lottery shared the story of an unnamed Anne Arundel County truck driver who scored a $1 million second-tier win on October 15.
Lottery officials said that the truck driver played the lottery once a week, always purchasing a variety of tickets but also always playing Mega Millions.
“The night before I buy my new tickets I check the ones that I have very carefully. While I was comparing my tickets to the winning numbers, I had to stop to take care of something in the house,” the truck driver told Maryland Lottery.
Due to the distraction, the truck driver reportedly missed checking one of the tickets.
The next morning as the truck driver was about to throw away the last week’s bunch of tickets and purchase a new set, a family member offered to scan the tickets with her lottery app as she was being dropped off at work by the truck driver, just to be sure.
Sure enough, the first ticket she scanned with the app was a $2 quick-pick Mega Millions ticket worth a $1 million jackpot. The family member then chased down the truck driver who had just dropped her off, waving her arms.
“I thought something was wrong when I saw her in the rear view mirror. When she got to the door, though, I knew it was good news. She had such a smile,” the truck driver said.
