Trucker killed after colliding with trailer that detached from second semi truck, Texas DPS says

Published:

The Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) is investigating a fatal semi truck crash that occurred in Hartley County on Thursday morning.

The crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. on October 10 east of Dalhart, Texas.

Officials say that Jose Santos-Borballa, 70, was operating a 2015 Volvo semi truck with a trailer as he exited a private drive and turned right to travel east on FM 281.

“In the process of… the turn, the semi-trailer detached from the truck tractor and came to rest in both lanes of travel,” TXDPS said.

Jesus Castillo-Rosas, 31, was operating a 2022 Mack truck with a trailer west on FM 281.

Castillo-Rosas was not able to avoid the detached trailer in the roadway. After Castillo-Rosas crashed into the trailer, the Mack truck came to a rest in the north ditch while the Mack truck’s trailer rolled into the south ditch.

Castillo-Rosas died at the scene.

Santos-Barballa was treated for injuries at the scene and released.

The crash is under investigation.
