Trucker ticketed after fatally striking fellow truck driver on foot on New York State Thruway

New York State Police (NYSP) say that a trucker was ticketed after fatally striking a fellow truck driver who was standing outside of his vehicle on the New York State Thruway on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at 12:10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10, on I-87, between exit 17 (Newburgh) and exit 16 (Harriman).

Troopers say that 42 year old New Jersey resident Jose L. Payano was standing outside of his Volvo bobtail tractor on the right shoulder of southbound I-87 at mile marker 47.2. It isn’t clear why Payano was on foot outside of his truck, NYSP says.

Thirty year old Albany resident Sean M. Haley was operating a Peterbilt tractor trailer, also southbound on I-87, when he sideswiped the Volvo and struck Payano.

Payano suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Haley was transported to a hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

NYSP says Haley was ticketed as a result of the crash.
