Trucker’s 911 call leads to discovery of man dragged out of car by bear

Published:

Man dragged out of car by bear discovered thanks to a passing trucker’s 911 call in Massachusetts over the weekend.

Police received the call from a trucker on Route 91 south in Hatfield, Massachusetts at around 11:30 a.m. reporting a car in the woods on the side of the road.

According to NBC Boston, troopers responded to the scene to find a damaged 2016 Honda Civic in the woods. Further investigation led to the discovery of a man’s body outside of the car and a bear sighting near the area.

Investigators determined that the bear had come in contact with the body at some point after the motorist lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the woods. Based on the evidence, 31-year-old Daniel Ducharme had lost control of his vehicle, struck the guardrail multiple times, and then went off of the roadway to the right. The car then traveled down an embankment, where it crashed into the woods.

Officers believe that Ducharme likely died in the crash and was either fully or partially ejected from the car, and the bear then dragged the body away from the vehicle.

The incident is still under investigation.
