Two people lost their lives in a major explosion at a plant in Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday afternoon.
Police and firefighters responded to the Givaudan facility located at 1901 Payne Street in Louisville at 3 p.m. on November 12 after dozens of 911 calls were placed.
A large explosion occurred at the plant, causing a partial building collapse.
Givaudan company officials confirmed on Wednesday morning that two employees were killed in the explosion.
At least 12 people were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to critical and/or life-threatening, according to Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg.
The Louisville Fire Department rescued and helped evacuate people trapped inside the plant following the explosion.
“I am incredibly proud of our first responders who rushed to the scene of this explosion and immediately went inside to help those who were injured,” said Greenberg. “I am confident their heroic efforts saved lives. My thoughts are with those who suffered injuries as a result of this tragedy, and we will continue to do everything possible to help these families.”
Givaudan is a Swiss company that makes food dyes and fragrances.
The cause of the explosion is still unknown.
The Louisville Fire Department is leading the investigation. The Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) will assist.
