Two truckers dead in chain-reaction big rig crash on Indiana interstate

Indiana State Police (ISP) are investigating a fatal chain-reaction big rig crash that occurred on I-65 early Tuesday morning.

Police responded to the collision near Austin, Indiana, at 11:50 p.m. on Monday, April 22.

Troopers say that three semi trucks were involved in a crash on southbound I-65 at mile marker 33.

WHAS11 reports that one semi truck stopped on I-65 due to traffic. A second semi then slowed behind the first semi. A third semi truck did not stop and crashed into the second semi.

The trucks caught fire following the crash.

The driver of the first truck was uninjured.

The drivers of the second and third trucks died at the scene.

A person in the sleeper of the third truck was airlifted for treatment of burns but is expected to survive.

As of 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Indiana State Police -Sellersburg is still investigating the crash and working with crews on cleanup, but southbound I-65 at mile marker 33 remains closed.

The detour is SR 256 at Austin exit to US 31 south to Scottsburg, according to ISP.
