Two truckers dead in fiery multiple big rig crash at Georgia Welcome Center

Published:

Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash at a Georgia Welcome Center in Port Wentworth on Wednesday night.

The crash occurred at a Welcome Center off I-95 southbound at mile marker 111 near Savannah, Georgia.

According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), a semi truck entered the rear parking area of the Welcome Center at a high rate of speed, striking a parked semi truck and setting off a chain-reaction crash that ultimately involved five semi trucks and a vehicle hauling a camper.

The driver of the semi truck that initially struck the second semi truck was pronounced dead.

The driver of the second semi truck was believed to have been asleep when the crash occurred. That driver also died, according to WJCL.

The other four drivers were able to escape the crash without injury.

All of the trucks caught fire following the crash.

Troopers say that it isn’t clear whether the truck driver who struck the other vehicles was suffering from a medical emergency.

The crash remains under investigation.
