Published:

A Guatemalan national was indicted Thursday for a smuggling attempt that eft 53 migrants dead.

As of August 22nd, Rigoberto Román Mirando Orozco is charged with six counts of smuggling migrants resulting in death for the 2022 deaths of 53 migrants inside of a sweltering tractor trailer in San Antonio, Texas.

According to AP News, Orozco has been connected to four of the migrants found inside of the trailer. Three of those four died as a result of the attempted smuggling. More than 12 people have been arrested for the incident since 2022, including seven people arrested by the Guatemalan government earlier this week.

“This is a collaborative effort between the Guatemalan police and Homeland Security, in addition to other national agencies, to dismantle the structures of human trafficking, one of the strategic objectives of the government President Bernardo Arévalo in order to take on the phenomenon of irregular migration,” said Guatemalan Interior Minister Francisco Jiménez.

Vehicles, cash, and other migrants were discovered during the raids by the Guatemalan government, officials say.
