Welfare check on trucker ends in “violent altercation” with officer

Welfare check ends in “violent altercation” between the responding police officer and the truck driver in Michigan on Monday night. 

The incident occurred on April 8th in St. Joseph, Michigan in the Fairplain area at Carronde Park and Riverbend Drive on Monday, shortly after 7 p.m.

According to ABC57, the officer in the area arrived to perform a welfare check on a 42-year-old truck driver, but the truck driver responded by driving his semi truck into the patrol car. The driver then drove away and crashed into a home on the 2300 block of Riverbend Drive.

The officer then followed the suspect and got into a “violent altercation” with the truck driver, which ended in the officer shooting the driver, reported ABC13

The truck driver was transported to a hospital where he died of his injuries. The police officer was also injured in the incident, but is expected to recover. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave. 

The identities of the truck driver and officer involved have not been released. No other information has been provided.
