1.48 million pound superload to tie up traffic on I-80 in Wyoming this week

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is asking drivers to consider alternate routes due to the transport of a slow moving superload on I-80.

On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, a superload hauling a transformer will be on the move along I-80 from Laramie to Medicine Bow.

The superload will leave the Laramie railyard at 6:00 a.m. on July 23 to begin the one-day journey to Medicine Bow, a 39 mile trip that is expected to be completed by noon.

WYDOT says that drivers should expect traffic delays on westbound I-80 from Laramie at mile marker 311 until the superload exits the interstate at Arlington at exit 272.

After exiting I-80, the transformer will be hauled on Wyoming Highway 13 to Rock River, then US Highway 30/287 to Medicine Bow.

“The transport dimensions are 17’3” tall, 26’ wide, 385’ long and weighs 1,484,000 lbs. Due to the size of the superload, both lanes of travel will be used. Not to cause damage to the interstate the transport will be traveling at 25-30 mph, dropping to 10 mph over bridges. Stoppages and travel delays should be expected. Adjust travel plans accordingly,” WYDOT said.

This is the second recent superload to be transported on this stretch of I-80 this summer.

“The transport is anticipated to return to the Laramie railyard in the coming weeks. One more transformer will be moved this summer. Schedule details to come,” officials said.
