A truck driver will be spending his first Thanksgiving OTR and away from his family this year, so his wife and children have decided to give back to the drivers that make the holiday possible in the first place.
The Roy family in Grand Junction, Colorado will be spending the Thanksgiving holiday apart this year, but that isn’t stopping them from spreading thanks. Mr. Roy will be spending Thanksgiving OTR for the first time this year, so Kandi Roy has decided that she and the children will spend the day passing out food to truck drivers at a nearby truck stop.
“He’s not going to be home this Thanksgiving and it’s the first time we’re not going to have him. So instead we’ve decided that we’re going to feed all the truckers at the truck stops and give them thanks for what they do and their hard work out there,” Kandi explained.
The Roys have already gotten permission from the management at the Love’s in Grand Junction to pass out pre-cooked holiday meals on the holiday. So far, the family has set up a GoFundMe to raise money for ingredients and plastic containers so that they can prep the food a few days ahead of time to make sure they have enough for as many drivers as possible.
“So we’ve coordinated with Love’s and they’ve approved us to be on site on Thanksgiving Day and to hand out meals to all the truckers there. I have a GoFundMe set up to try to help raise some funds to come up with some of the last-minute items we’re going to need. We’re also accepting donations for the food that we’re going to need; we’re going to need turkeys, mashed potatoes, stuffing, all the Thanksgiving fixings, and so we’re just accepting donations. We’re going to prepare all the meals the weekend before up to the day before and then finish preparing and packaging them on the day of Thanksgiving and delivering them out there,” Kandi said to KKCO11.
The family hopes to pass out meals to at least 200 truckers throughout the day.
“Truckers are like the heartbeat of America. Without America, they kind of, everything just comes to a halt and it just stops. We don’t have our food, our medical supplies, anything that we need on a daily basis without our truckers. And so we’re just grateful to be able to do something in return for them and say thank you because they often get missed.”
