Alabama officials warn drivers to consider “every bridge impassable” and “every road a risk” as snow and ice blankets majority of state’s roadways

Officials in Alabama are warning drivers to only travel if necessary after a winter storm left snow and ice on a large portion of the state’s roadways.

The winter storm hit the state of Alabama overnight starting on January 9th and into January 10th.

According to AL News, a semi truck jackknifed on U.S. 280 at Red Mountain Expressway in Jefferson County, Alabama. Officials say that is just one of many incidents they expect to come from the winter conditions.

”Right now, if I was a driver, I’d consider every bridge impassable whether that bridge is impassable or not,’’ said Jefferson County EMA Director Jim Coker. ”I would consider every road to be a risk and do everything you can to alleviate that risk.”

As of 8 a.m. CST, The Alabama Department of Transportation was actively treating Interstate 20 from the Georgia state line to the Logan Martin Bridge. US 31 in Vestavia Hills and all city roads in Childersburg are closed due to poor conditions.

All roads in Pickens County have been deemed impassable, and all roads in  Etowah, Dekalb and Cherokee counties are quickly becoming impassable. Some roads in Chambers County are also becoming very slick.

Other counties reporting their roads as “impassable” include Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker, and Winston.
