California transportation officials recently kicked off a construction project to build a new “state of the art” truck scales facility in Cordelia.
On August 15, 2025, Caltrans held a groundbreaking ceremony for a project to replace the existing Cordelia Truck Scales along westbound I‐80.
Caltrans stated that the new facility “will have the capacity to inspect up to 1000 trucks per hour passing the facility 24 hours per day, seven days a week.”
The new Cordelia truck scales will be located less than a mile east from the current location and will provide a new braided off‐ramp connection and new entrance ramp connection to and from I‐80 West.

“The new facility will have the capacity to inspect all westbound I‐80 trucks passing the facility 24 hours per day, seven days a week, with seven covered inspection areas to accommodate long vehicle combinations, elevated structures to enable inspectors to check the domes and top portions of cargo trucks, “Weigh In Motion” scales with the capability to sort truck traffic into the appropriate lane along the approach roadway, and a minimum of four sets of scales to accommodate two lines of empty and loaded trucks,” Caltrans said.
The project is scheduled for completion by December 2029.
Officials say that the current facility, built in 1958, is “outdated, under capacity, and does not include state of the art technology required for truck inspections today.”
Caltrans noted that short on and off ramps at the facility often force trucks to queue on I-80, “increasing the potential for rear-end accidents.” During peak traffic, the facility is forced to close to prevent the I-80 backups.
The Cordelia facility currently accommodates between 500 and 700 trucks per day and consists of two dynamic scales, one static scale, four inspection bays, and limited parking.
