Transportation officials in Ontario will deploy new x-ray technology to scan commercial vehicles as part of the inspection process.
On September 17, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) announced that “enforcement officers are now using X-ray scanners to make cargo inspections more effective.”
In a video announcement, Ontario Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria says that the x-ray technology is now deployed at the Gananoque Commercial Vehicle Inspection Facility, and the technology will be expanded for use at two other commercial vehicle inspection facilities “very soon.”
“These scanners make cargo inspections more efficient and effective by ensuring the loads on our commercial vehicles are secure and dangerous goods are transported safely,” said Sarkaria.
The mobile x-ray inspection scanners will be deployed with a focus on detecting non-compliance, according to an MTO memo shared with the Ontario Trucking Association. The memo also stated that drivers will be required to exit the cab when the x-ray scanners are in use.
