CHP nabs truck driver for an ‘astonishing’ 95 m.p.h. speed violation on I-5

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently called out a truck driver for an excessive speed violation on I-5.

On July 18, 2025, CHP’s Yreka Division issued a statement on catching a semi truck traveling at 40 m.p.h. over the speed limit for trucks near the Oregon border earlier this month.

“The risks associated with excessive speed are substantial, especially in a big rig. This big rig was observed driving southbound on I-5, south of the Oregon border at an astonishing 95 m.p.h.!” troopers said.

CHP reminds commercial vehicle drivers that trucks over three axles are legally capped at 55 mph on all highways, interstates, and freeways, even if the posted speed limit is higher, per California Vehicle Code 22406.

Troopers also shared an image of the citation issued to the truck driver on July 5.
