CHP stop on semi truck for 82 MPH speed violation leads to DUI arrest

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently arrested a truck driver for an alcohol violation after initiating a traffic stop for speeding.

On December 8, 2025, CHP’s San Luis Obispo Division shared details on a recent commercial vehicle traffic stop that ended in an arrest.

Troopers say that a semi truck was initially stopped on southbound US-101 at Avila for speeding at 82 m.p.h.

The commercial vehicle driver “displayed signs of intoxication” but reportedly refused a chemical test, forcing troopers to obtain a warrant from a judge for a mandatory test.

Following the test, the truck driver was arrested for DUI.

“ZERO TOLERANCE for Commercial Drivers, especially when driving a vehicle that could possibly have a gross vehicle weight of up to 80,000 lbs,” CHP said.
