A man was arrested on manslaughter charges after crashing into a semi truck with an e-scooter, resulting in the death of his passenger.
The accident happened at around 3 a.m. on August 17th, in Northeast Portland, Oregon, but 21-year-old Jayden Calkins was not arrested until Wednesday, September 17th.
According to Oregon Live, Jayden Calkins was driving an e-scooter on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at Holladay Street when he collided with a passing tractor trailer. The collision killed 24-year-old Gerardo Ortiz Henriquez, who was riding on the back of the scooter, and left Calkins with serious injuries.
The truck driver was initially considered a suspect in the accident, but his full cooperation in the investigation led officers to conclude that “his actions are not believed to be the cause of the crash.”
An indictment against Calkins alleges that he was drunk at the time of the crash. Calkins turned himself in to police on Wednesday, reported Fox 12. He was charged with second-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving.
