FMCSA grants 16 exemptions for hearing impaired drivers across the country

Published:

16 hearing impaired people have been granted an exemption from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to operate commercial vehicles.

The ruling from the FMCSA will extend through December 2026 and is based on the individuals’ ability to maintain or surpass safety standards currently required to operate a commercial vehicle. The safe driving of the individuals was determined through multiple evaluations.

All 16 exempted drivers will be able to operate across state lines. The FMCSA’s decision can be traced back to recent studies showing that hearing impairment does not necessarily increase crash risks.

According to Fox 54, the 16 drivers are based out of Alabama, Mississippi, California, Texas, Connecticut, Illinois, and Michigan.
