High winds and dust in Kansas temporarily bring trucking to a stop

High winds and dust in Kansas on Thursday temporarily brought trucking to a stop as drivers waited for driving conditions to improve.

Wind gusts between 45 and 70 mph blew across Kansas on Thursday, December 18th, forcing many truckers to pull off the road to avoid a blowover crash.

According to KSN, many truckers driving through Wichita pulled over to avoid any issues, preventing many of them from completing their deliveries on time.

“Well, I was supposed to be gone 2½ hours ago, but I’m waiting for the wind to die down a little bit,” said one driver heading to Alabama.

“It’s very dangerous,” said truck driver Will Dewilksons, who was on his way to Dallas. “You have to be very cautious, especially if you are coming into the wind. More than likely, you might have to pull over and stop because with a light truck, you are not able to keep it on the road. And if the wind gusts, it will blow you off the road.”

The high wind advisory for the area ended on Thursday night around 6 p.m. A blowing dust warning was also issued in the western part of the state, where the high winds caused low visibility due to dirt and dust. The high winds and dust warnings were all lifted by Thursday evening.
