Houston PD says motorist to blame for fatal crash, not hit-and-run semi truck as originally stated

Published:

The Houston Police Department (HPD) has issued a correction about the involvement of a semi truck in a fatal multi-vehicle collision.

The January 31 collision occurred on 11400 South Sam Houston Parkway East (Beltway 8) in Houston, Texas, at around 7:10 p.m.

HPD initially stated that “vehicles were stopped at the above address at a red light at the intersection with Sabo Road, when an 18-wheeler crashed into multiple vehicles.”

HPD also released images and video of the truck believed to have been involved.

On February 5, HPD issued a new statement to clarify that there was no 18 wheeler involved in the collision.

“Further investigation and surveillance videos determined a black Lexus RX350, traveling at a high rate of speed, crashed into the rear of a silver Chevrolet Cavalier. The impact caused the Chevrolet to flip and came to a rest on the sidewalk,” HPD said.

The Cavalier driver, Francisco Medillin, 44, died at the scene. A nine year old passenger in the Cavalier was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Lexus driver is listed in critical condition.

The crash investigation is ongoing, said HPD.
