The Illinois State Police (ISP) are investigating after several vehicles traveling on I-57 were damaged by objects thrown from overpasses in the Effingham area.
On August 4, ISP issued an alert after vehicles were damaged by thrown objects on I-57 in Effingham and Shelby counties.
Troopers said that “multiple damage to vehicle reports have been taken” over the past week.
ISP is investigating these incidents as cases of Vehicular Endangerment, a Class 2 Felony under Illinois law.
“ISP emphasizes that throwing items from an overpass onto moving vehicles presents an immediate and severe threat to public safety,” troopers said.
Police are asking for public help in locating suspects or suspicious activity spotted on I-57 near overpasses between Effingham and Sigel (mile marker 165 to 170).
If you witnessed any suspicious activity or have dash cam video from the area during the nighttime hours in recent days, you are asked to call ISP at (217) 342-7871.
