A truck driver was pulled from his wrecked rig by a team of inmates working a highway in Kentucky on Thursday morning.
The accident happened at 9:25 a.m. on the eastbound side of US Highway 6 near the Frederica Street intersection in Owensboro, Kentucky.
According to Corrections1 News, an accident involving one passenger vehicle and a state highway vehicle occurred in the easybound lanes of Highway 6 as a crew of inmates from the Daviess County Detention Center worked to fill potholes.
A semi truck then came over a nearby hill and lost control, nearly crashing into the inmates before jacknifing and overturning. The inmate workers then rushed to the wrecked truck to try to free the driver, while others grabbed fire extinguishers and worked to quench a fire that had broken out.
Several crew members then used a piece of metal to break a truck window and free the truck driver. The truck driver, Bryan Marcum, escaped and was walking around a talking, but did sustain injuries considered to be non-life threatening.
“They actually got the fire out. There was leaking fuel. That was the danger from the fire,” said Daviess County Jailer Art Maglinger.
The inmates are expected to receive official recognition for the rescue efforts.
