The Maine State Police (MSP) highlighted a new initiative that uses commercial motor vehicle (CMV) troopers to target traffic violations performed by passenger vehicle drivers operating near semi trucks in an effort to improve overall highway safety.
On December 30, 2025, MSP announced that the Troop K Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (CVEU) “recently started an initiative to target passenger car violations in the context of commercial vehicle safety as a proactive approach to enhance highway safety in Maine.”
Enforcement details were conducted in Bangor, Winthrop, and the greater Portland area due to the high volume of truck traffic in those areas.
Troopers said that the CVEU is focusing on car drivers because “with a significant percentage (65%) of fatal commercial vehicle crashes in 2025 attributed to passenger cars, this strategy aims to mitigate risks and improve overall traffic safety.”
“By focusing on passenger cars that violate traffic laws around commercial trucks, the unit seeks to create safer interactions between these vehicles and commercial trucks, which is crucial for preventing accidents,” MSP said.
Troopers say that the passenger vehicle enforcement details are aligned with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) goal of reducing crashes involving commercial vehicles that result in injuries and fatalities.
