U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized over a ton of illegal drugs from a shipment of produce passing through a Texas cargo facility this week.
The drug seizure took place on February 4 at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility located in Pharr, Texas.
A tractor trailer with a load manifested as cucumbers and jalapenos approached the facility from Mexico seeking entry into the U.S.
The tractor trailer was selected for additional screening using non-intrusive inspection equipment and a canine unit.
A physical inspection of the vehicle uncovered 26 packages of alleged heroin weighing 7.53 pounds and 8,206 packages of alleged methamphetamine with a total weight of 2,217.85 pounds concealed within the shipment.
CBP estimates that officers seized $19,800,000 in methamphetamine and $144,500 in heroin.
CBP seized the narcotics and tractor trailer.
The case was handed over to Homeland Security Investigations.
“Our CBP officers don’t skip a beat when it comes to securing our border. This interception illustrates the important work CBP does to secure our border from harmful narcotics,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.
