My Journey: From Iraq to the U.S. Army National Guard

From Guest Author Fahad Al-Kadhim

In 2007, my life changed forever — I was kidnapped in Iraq. It was one of the hardest experiences I’ve ever faced, but it also became the start of a new path.

After surviving that ordeal, I decided to dedicate myself to helping others and joined the U.S. Army as an interpreter. Working alongside American soldiers taught me strength, discipline, and the meaning of true teamwork.

In 2015, I immigrated to the United States — a dream come true. I started over with nothing but hope and determination. My first job was at Amazon as a temporary employee. Through hard work, I moved up, step by step, from Amazon CDL driver, trainer until I became a Training Manager covering the entire state of Michigan.

Then in 2020, I took another proud step — I joined the Michigan Army National Guard as 88M (Motor Transport Operator) to continue serving the country that gave me a second chance.

My journey hasn’t been easy, but it proves that no matter where you start, with faith, courage, and dedication, you can build a new life and give back to others.

Never forget where you came from — but always focus on where you’re going.
