The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Week inspection campaign kicks off this weekend. Here’s what you need to know.
CVSA Brake Safety Week 2025 takes place from Sunday, August 24, through Saturday, August 30, in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
“Brake Safety Week aims to improve commercial motor vehicle brake safety throughout North America. The goal is to eliminate roadway crashes by conducting roadside inspections and educating drivers, mechanics, large- and small-fleet motor carriers, owner-operators, and others on the importance of proper brake inspection, maintenance and operation,” the CVSA said.

Law enforcement officers and CVSA inspectors will conduct standard commercial motor vehicle inspections, focusing on brake systems and components.
Trucks that have brake-related out-of-service violations, or any other out-of-service violations, are taken off the roadway until repairs are made.
Certain jurisdictions will use performance-based brake testers (PBBT) as part of the Brake Safety Week effort.
Additionally, inspectors will collect data about commercial motor vehicle inspections, brake systems and components, and brake-related violations and report that data to the CVSA.
This year, inspectors will be paying special attention to brake drum and rotors.
During Brake Safety Week 2024, officers conducted 16,725 inspections on commercial motor vehicles. A total of 2,149 of those inspected vehicles had brake-related out-of-service violations, which is a 12.8% out-of-service rate.
