The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has implemented new width restrictions for vehicles traveling through the Green River Tunnel.
On March 11, WYDOT announced a new width restriction of 8 feet 6 inches for vehicles traveling on I-80 through the eastbound Green River Tunnel near Green River, Wyoming, following the completion of paving operations.
The previous restrictions were a 10.5 foot width and 16 foot height restriction.
WYDOT says that oversized vehicles should contact the Wyoming Highway Patrol’s oversize loads permit office for detours.

Traffic is head-to-head through the eastbound I-80 Green River Tunnel due to a 26 vehicle crash that occurred in the westbound tunnel on February 14. Three people lost their lives in the fiery crash inside the tunnel, which remains under investigation.

WYDOT is now focused on readying the westbound tunnel for reopening, but the clean-up operation is extensive, and there is currently no estimated time for the tunnel to reopen.
“WYDOT has contracted Clean Harbors, an environmental and industrial service company, to conduct the clean-up and disposal work in the westbound tunnel. WYDOT is working with the company to begin the work as soon as possible,” officials said.
Drivers passing through the area area asked to drive cautiously and be aware of roadside workers and vehicles.
