North Carolina troopers launch 90 day traffic enforcement on I-485 in response to multi-vehicle crash that killed six

Published:

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) announced a new enforcement initiative to take place on I-485 in response to a recent multiple fatality crash.

On Thursday, August 14, NCSHP announced the launch of the I-485 Alive campaign.

The I-485 Alive will involve 90 days of increased police presence along the I-485 corridor as well as partner enforcement efforts from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

The I-485 Alive campaign is a response to a crash that occurred on July 26, 2025, on I-485 in the Charlotte area. Troopers hope to reduce dangerous driving behaviors to curb crashes that result in injury or death.

During this crash, a Honda CRV driven by Paul Sauer, 16, moved right from the middle lane, striking a Chrysler van driven by 27 year old Samuel Holmes. Both vehicles went off the right side of the interstate and crashed into the side of a tractor trailer.

Sauer was killed in the crash, along with five of the six people in the Chrysler van.

A sixteen year old female in the van survived the crash and was hospitalized with injuries.

The truck driver was not injured.
