North Dakota interstate speed limit increase in effect as of August 1

Speed limits are increasing on many North Dakota interstates this week.

Effective at midnight on Friday, August 1, the speed limit for North Dakota interstates increased from 75 m.p.h. to 80 m.p.h. in most areas.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) will spend the next two weeks updating speed limit signs across the state.

While the speed limit will be increasing to 80 m.p.h. on most interstates, it will drop to 70 m.p.h. near Dickinson, Grand Forks, Jamestown, Medora and Valley City, according to state transportation officials.

While the speed limit is going, drivers will reportedly have less leeway from law enforcement for speeding. Inforum reports that North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers were instructed to only give drivers 2 m.p.h. of leeway over the new speed limit, down from the usual 5 m.p.h.

The new speed limit went into effect following the signing of House Bill 1298 into law in May 2025.
