Ohio DOT to spend $150 million to build 1,400 new truck parking spaces statewide

On Tuesday, Ohio transportation officials unveiled a plan to significantly increase the number of available truck parking spaces statewide in an effort to reduce crashes.

During a July 29, 2025, news conference at a rest area on located on I-71 in Warren County, Ohio, Governor Mike DeWine and representatives from Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced a plan to expand commercial truck parking at dozens of locations statewide.

Officials say that ODOT will spend $150 million to build more than 1,400 new truck parking spaces at 33 ODOT-owned locations in Ohio.

“Following an extensive review of ODOT property, Ohio has identified 33 sites in 19 counties where long-term truck parking lots will be created or expanded, more than doubling current truck parking capacity at ODOT-maintained sites,” officials said in a news release on the project.

Ohio currently has 14,200 truck parking spaces available statewide, with most located at privately-owned truck stops or businesses.

The 33 new truck parking lots will be added in the following counties:

Construction on the commercial truck parking expansion project is expected to begin in 2026. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Officials hope that increasing truck parking availability will cut down on crashes involving commercial vehicles.

“Ohio’s new truck parking plan is a major step forward in improving safety for truck drivers and everyone on the road,” said ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn. “These projects will make our state a national leader in total truck parking capacity—setting the standard for safety and service.”
