The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) cited a truck driver hauling an oversized load for numerous violations after intercepting the vehicle before it entered the Green River Tunnel.
On September 13, 2025, officers stationed at the Evanston Port of Entry spotted an oversize load that had bypassed the port and stayed on the freeway. The information was relayed to WHP troopers in the area.
Some time after receiving the tip, a WHP Commercial Carrier Trooper parked west of the Green River Tunnel was able to intercept the oversize load before it entered the tunnel.

From WHP’s Commercial Carrier Division:
“The Trooper discovered the driver was operating without an oversize load permit. Driver was cited for skipping the Port of Entry, operating oversize without permit or permission and ignoring road closed signs. These citations totaled over $800 altogether. Driver was then issued permits back to the detour off of exit 83 to continue to their destination.
This was one several oversize loads that were stopped by Troopers Saturday before entering the tunnel. Let this serve as a reminder that NO OVERSIZE LOADS, under any circumstances, will be allowed through the Green River Tunnel and, additionally through the city of Green River. All commercial drivers hauling oversized loads must follow routes given on their oversize/overweight permits. All oversize/overweight loads must have permit or permission prior to entering Wyoming.“
In February 2025, a 26 vehicle pileup occurred in the westbound Green River Tunnel, leaving three people dead. The fiery crash caused severe damage to the tunnel and forced lane restrictions as work continues to repair and rebuild the structure.
In August, WHP issued a warning to the trucking community to steer clear “after several unauthorized, oversized loads have attempted to enter the I-80 tunnel at Green River, causing damage to the tunnels, hit and run crashes, and traffic delays.”
