A pedestrian was fatally struck by an unoccupied semi truck in Holt County, Missouri, over the weekend.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) responded to a call for assistance around 12:40 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, in Mound City, Missouri.
Troopers say that a 1999 Peterbilt was parked on the east shoulder of northbound I-29 when it “became a downhill runaway” and struck a 33 year old male Nebraska resident on foot.
After striking the pedestrian, the Peterbilt ran off the east side of the roadway, and the towed unit struck a light pole.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
KCTV5 reports that the Peterbilt was unoccupied when the crash occurred and that “winter weather conditions” caused the semi truck to slide down a hill, leading to the fatal pedestrian strike.
The Mound City area was hard hit over the weekend by a severe winter storm that forced the extended closure of I-29.

Troopers continue assisting motorists on I-29 in NW Missouri. MODOT is attempting to clear snow-packed roads. Small towns like Mound City have become parking lots for those who made it off the highway. Tomorrow will not be a good travel day. Stay home if possible! pic.twitter.com/Ku0HpxjwID
