A petition proposing semi trucks be banned from school zones in a Florida county has earned more than 1,500 signatures in a week.
The petition comes in the wake of a tragic accident involving two students outside of a middle school on Thursday, January 30th in Palm Beach County, Florida.
According to WBPF news, two students collided on bicycles and fell into the path of a semi truck. The two children were then run over. One child died and the other was injured. The truck driver was found not at fault.
Now, more than 1,500 people have signed a petition to ban semi trucks from traveling through active school zones.
The petition reads:
“Our goal is simple yet crucial: to ensure that no semi-trucks pass by any schools in Palm Beach County while the school zone lights are activated. During these critical times, when students are arriving and leaving, the roads should be clear of large vehicles that pose a significant risk. By implementing a rerouting plan for trucks during school hours, we can create a safer environment for all children. It’s time to prioritize student safety and take decisive action to prevent further tragedies. Lets advocate for changes that will protect our students and ensure they can safely get to and from school.”
