Rest area on I-40 in New Mexico closes until late 2025 for $20 million reconstruction

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) announced the long-term closure of a rest area for reconstruction.

On Monday, January 6, NMDOT closed the Rattlesnake Draw Rest Area to begin construction on $20 million worth of upgrades to the facility.

The Rattlesnake Draw Rest Area is located on I-40 (eastbound and westbound), mile marker 207 to 208 in Torrance County, New Mexico.

Officials say that the rest area will remain closed for 300 calendar days, reopening at the end of 2025.

The reconstruction project will involve:

  • Demolition of the old facility
  • Construction of new 2,850 square foot restroom facilities
  • Rehabilitate Picnic Shelters
  • Passenger and truck parking
  • Upgraded water and sewer system
