Rest areas on I-65 in Indiana to close until 2027 for conversion to truck parking-only facilities

Published:

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will shutter a pair of rest areas along I-65 next month for a major construction project that will increase truck parking availability.

On Friday, December 5, 2025, INDOT will close the northbound and southbound I-65 Taylorsville Rest Areas (I-65 southbound, mile marker 74.5 and I-65 northbound, mile marker 72.5) in Bartholomew County to convert them into truck parking-only facilities.

INDOT awarded $26.6 million to Milestone Contractors, LP, for this project.

See below for planned improvements:

  • Construction of 38 additional truck parking spaces at the northbound rest area – new total of 75 spaces.
  • Construction of 31 additional truck parking spaces at the southbound rest area – new total of 75 spaces.
  • Construction of two new trucker restroom facilities at each location
  • Removal of current restroom facilities at each location

Officials expect the project to be completed in late 2027.

Both rest areas will remain completely closed during the construction process.

The repurposing of the Taylorsville Rest Areas to truck parking-only facilities is part of the larger INDOT Rest Area and Welcome Center Improvement Plan, which will add more than 1,200 semi truck parking spaces across the state.

Earlier this week, INDOT opened a rest area along I-70 near Terre Haute with 128 truck parking spaces, which is also part of the state’s plan to increase truck parking availability.
