Semi truck’s rear brakes catch fire after Brake Safety Week inspection, Virginia DMV says

A semi truck driver had a tough time during a weigh station inspection conducted in support of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Brake Safety Week campaign.

On Monday, August 25, officers from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles conducted inspections at the Carson Weigh Station located off I-95 in Petersburg in support of the nationwide Brake Safety Week campaign.

During the single day inspection effort, officials issued citations for 24 violations, including 19 brake-related violations.

“One truck’s rear brakes caught fire shortly after inspection! It’s a prime example of why we conduct these inspections,” DMV officials said. “National Brake Safety Week focuses on the importance of properly functioning and well-maintained brake systems. This helps keep EVERYONE safe on the road!”

Brake Safety Week 2025 is held from August 24 — 30.
