There’s about to be one less low railroad bridge to worry about

There is about to be one less low railroad bridge for drivers to worry about thanks to a planned demolition happening this weekend in Connecticut.

The railroad bridge over West Main Street between Thomaston Avenue and Sperry Street in downtown Waterbury, Connecticut is scheduled for demolition this weekend. The project started on Friday, March 21st and is expected to continue through Monday, March 24th.

The demolition has been coordinated through the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the city of Waterbury, along with Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski. The 12 foot, 7 inch bridge has been responsible for hundreds of ‘can opener’ wrecks throughout the years, but once the project is completed, drivers will have one less low clearance bridge to avoid in the area.

“Detours will be in place from Friday, March 21, through Monday, March 24. If possible, please plan to avoid the area to minimize delays and congestion,” the Mayor’s officer wrote in a statement.
