Tractor trailer veers out of control and plunges into Winnipesaukee River, killing driver

A truck driver is dead after his out of control semi truck veered across multiple barriers and plunged into the Winnipesaukee River.

The accident happened early on Friday morning, August 8th at about 1:52 a.m. on Interstate 93 southbound near mile marker 57 in Tilton, New Hampshire. 

According to New Hampshire State Police, a truck driver in a 2025 Black Western Star semi truck failed to negotiate a curve and broke through a center median guardrail. The out of control semi truck then drove over the median and an embankment, and crossed some railroad tracks before plunging into the Winnipesaukee River and landing on its side. 

The truck driver has been identified as 48-year-old Benjamin A. Wilson of Granby, Vermont. 

The left lane of I-93 southbound was closed at mile marker 57 for investigation and cleanup of the incident. Anyone with information on the crash is urged to contact Trooper Conor Davis at Conor.K.Davis@dos.nh.gov.
