A semi truck hauling musical instruments for a high school band heading to competition was struck by a train on its way to the venue on Monday.
The accident happened on November 3rd in San Antonio, Texas at around 2:40 p.m. near Carolina Street and Hoefgen Avenue.
According to Kens5, the truck was less than a mile from the UIL State Marching Band contest when it became stuck on the train tracks and was struck by a train. The owners of the musical instruments, students from Vandegrift High School, were already at the Alamodome at the time of the collision.
“No students were present or witnessed the accident, and both driver and passenger were able to successfully and safely exit the tractor trailer before impact,” Principal Charlie Little said. “At this time, although it was a catastrophic impact, the bulk of the instruments remain intact, and the main damage was to the tractor cab.”
Other schools attending the competition offered to lend their instruments to the VHS students. It is unclear if the offer was accepted. The competition schedule was rearranged as a result of the incident, putting the VHS marching band in the final slot at 9:15 p.m.
