Truckers could save 40 minutes through NC with potential speed limit increase

A new proposed speed limit increase through North Carolina could benefit truck drivers passing through the area.

The bipartisan bill was introduced this week. The bill would also change license suspension rules for speeding violations.

According to WSOC-TV, the bill could raise the speed limit in the state from 70 to 75 mph on highways. The bill would also lead to potential license suspensions for drivers caught driving over 85 mph on roadways with a 75 mph speed limit.

The license suspension rules for speeding would only apply to violations on or after December 1st, 2025.

Supporters of the bill say that the increased speed limit would save drive time for important jobs such as trucking. For example, the speed limit change could reduce a trucker’s round trip from Wilmington to Asheville by 40 minutes.

The bill is currently in a house committee.
