Police say that hundreds of drivers are stranded on a snowy Alabama roadway on Wednesday morning following a Tuesday afternoon commercial vehicle crash.
On January 22, the Dale County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) said that approximately 200 vehicles are stranded on Highway 231 at Highway 51 near Ozark, Alabama.
According to WDHN, the backups on Highway 231 began when a semi truck jackknifed near mile marker 50, resulting in slide-offs.
Initially, DCSO reported that about 40 drivers were stuck in the traffic backup on Highway 231, but that number grew overnight as people continued to drive onto the highway. No injuries were reported.
Some drivers have reportedly been stuck on the highway since 7 p.m. last night.
As of Wednesday morning, both directions of the highway are closed.
“Recovery efforts are ongoing but are compounded by more vehicles trying to enter this area. Please avoid the area,” DCSO said.
The National Guard is on scene assisting with removing stuck trucks and cars.
